Co-op Switzerland announced that it has stopped the automatic printing of receipts at staffed checkouts.
This move is part of the retailer’s sustainability strategy and will save more than 400 tonnes of paper each year.
Stop automatic receipt printing
Two years ago, Coop Switzerland stopped printing receipts automatically at the cash desks.
It allows customers to choose whether they want to print a receipt at the end of the payment process.
Following the success of this initiative, the retailer will eliminate the automatic printing of tickets at the checkouts of Coop supermarkets, food sections of Coop City department stores, Karma and Sapori outlets and Coop To Go.
Since 2015, the merchant has provided digital receipts to customers with a Supercard.
The receipt is no longer sent by email, but is automatically stored on Supercard.ch under “My purchases” after each purchase, the merchant added.
Coop Switzerland’s sustainability strategy
By reducing its paper consumption, Coop Switzerland contributes to its sustainable development strategy by aiming to become a zero waste company.
Last summer, the Swiss retailer released its first digital sustainability report, outlining efforts to be more sustainable.
For its group sustainability strategy, Coop has defined six areas around sustainability based on the three pillars – sustainable ranges, environmental and climate protection, and employees and social commitment – and adopted new multi-annual objectives for the entire group until 2026.
