As the COVID-19 pandemic continues its resurgence in East Asia, organizers of the Hong Kong International Jewelery Show and the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem and Pearl Show have made the difficult decision to reschedule.
Both shows were scheduled to run from April 14-18 and will now start on July 29 and end on August 2. They will be held alongside the Hong Kong Simply Shopping Fest at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Both fairs will be open to the public. The organizer, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said details of the arrangement will be announced in due course.
Last year’s “twin” shows attracted over 30,000 attendees, including 13,000 industry buyers.
The 2020 editions of the shows have been purely and simply cancelled. The 2021, although a success, also suffered a postponement. The last pre-pandemic broadcast (2019) reported over 90,000 “visits” on both events.
Hong Kong has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic in recent weeks. For much of the past two years, the city has been a poster child for the “COVID-Zero” approach with tough travel restrictions (among other measures) keeping the virus at bay.
However, the levee burst earlier this year and with daily death tolls frequently running into the hundreds, Hong Kong hit a record high of 73,000 daily cases on March 4.
In response to the outbreak, the Hong Kong government has announced a change in approach and from April 1, fully vaccinated citizens will benefit from relaxed restrictions on the travel and education aspects of public gatherings.
Other restrictions will remain in place and the premier venue for jewelry shows – the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center – remains closed until at least April 20.
It’s another blow for a city that recently lost its Jewelery & Gem World Fair (JGW) host status.
The JGW 2022 fair has been moved to Singapore, with the exhibition running from September 23 to 27.
Hong Kong is the traditional host of the JGW fair and the organizers have not ruled out a return in 2023. Informa Markets has also scheduled special edition fairs such as the Jewelery & Gem Asia Hong Kong event from June 16-19 and Jewelery & Gem World Hong Kong from September 16-19.
