Fashion columnist and influencer Joanne Hegarty on her party-ready fashion tips.
I recently read an exciting Instagram caption, written by the owner of a well-known clothing brand, which stated: “Here at [name redacted to spare blushes] sequins are for everyday. And every day you should aim to be your best self.
This made me moan out loud. Without fail, every November the glitter brigade comes out to sell this idea that we should all circle around our kitchens in head-to-toe sparkle. And if you’re not a daytime twinkle, you feel like a Christmas prankster, absolutely failing to be that magical, elusive “better self.”
Well, I’m going to raise my hand and say that as a grown woman, the thought of wearing sequins during the day, in real life, makes me very anxious. I like to do a lot of things during the day and I don’t think anyone would take me seriously if I showed up dressed as a disco ball.
Don’t get me wrong, I have a thing for sequins, but I prefer to save mine for the evenings. Under cover of darkness, they look sexy and fun. I like to wear a sequined skirt with a fitted black mesh on top for contrast; a sequin dress with delicate sandals; a trouser suit with sequined shoes…
I’ve learned that the key to a great party outfit is texture, texture, texture. Mixing and matching different elements such as leather, velvet – and even sequins – creates a look that captures the comfort and glamor of this time of year. And if you’re looking for more inspiration as the festive season heats up, may I suggest…
It’s a wonderful invention – a complete outfit in one that can be easily dressed up with a pair of heels and a blazer as Christmas approaches. It is the ideal choice for a festive afterwork with friends.
Rich red and green velvet
I love wearing these classic shades this season, and they’re especially gorgeous in velvet – think dresses and pantsuits.
Play with textures by pairing a velvet top or jacket with a leather or sequined skirt. Cefinn, Aspiga and Massimo Dutti are good bets for these coins.
Feather-trimmed dresses, tops and sweaters are such an easy way to add a huge dollop of glamor to your event look.
winter white Where an LBD
Simple, true, but simple often wins. A clean little winter white or black dress looks effortlessly elegant with gold or silver accessories – think chunky chain necklaces and small clutches.
NEW ROLLER MODELS
Forget the It-bag, this season, make way for the suitcase. Pent-up travel demand has created opportunities for new luggage brands such as Paravel, Baboon to the Moon, July, Roam, Monos and Beis.
STATUS AND STYLE
The art-show-meets-shopping experience is even more enticing: Dar Leone sells a selection of its coveted jewelery in each of the Tate Gallery shops, in London, Liverpool and St Ives. Gorgeous – and great for gifts.
COMPANION OF HONOR
Is this the new buzz phrase for elegant weddings? That’s how Sienna Miller was described recently when she honored her best friend, publicist Tori Cook, who married DJ and event producer Hugo Heathcote. The ceremony was a lakeside blessing under an oak tree in Surrey.
